Sounds of SOULE Spotlight: Cassius Cruz

Read Carefully

When I first heard Azucar, I was transported to the damp, steamy floor of a jungle at night. I could hear the sounds of birds cawing loudly, flitting through the silent leaves, monkeys swinging and settling in amongst the branches above. These tropical sounds, combined with the sweet sadness of minor chords, echoed throughout this fresh project’s sonic delivery. Immediately, I knew that, if given the chance, I had to put other’s on to the enigma that is Cassius Cruz.

In the wake of other artists championing the Afro-Latinx sound sphere, Cassius brings a whole new perspective to the table by marrying the mango-ripe rhythms of the Caribbean with a spicy Latin flare. However, don’t be fooled: his rap acumen is definitely reminiscent of old school Brooklyn rappers who were proud to push the pen by creating authentic bars with real heart behind them.

This is one artist you do NOT want to sleep on.

Artist Name: Cassius Cruz

Hometown: Brooklyn NY

Favorite de-stress activity?: (that’s a secret!)

How do you identify?: Gay (during business hours)

Genre: Pop, Hip Hop, R&B

SOULE: What inspires you to create?

CASSIUS: Well, I don’t really have a choice; if I didn’t create, I’d be severely depressed. For me, creating is a life or death situation, but that isn’t a bad thing; it’s what’s most natural to me. One of the biggest joys of making music, for me, is how contagious the inspirational energy is when I am able to share my work with others. It fulfills me when people are able to tell me that I have inspired them in any way. That is my purpose: to breathe life into the souls of others.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

Beyoncé. She has such a strong charismatic energy that emanates through her music and her live performances. When I see how much she influences people to be their best, that gives me a measure of how much I want to do the same.

Which of your songs would you say embodies your “story”?

I don’t think there’s a linear story that’s told through any of my music. I’ve explored many different facets of myself that exist at the same time but sonically contrast each other enough to create a very unique experience for the listener. My last EP ‘Azucar’ was the first time I explored the concept of my attraction to men and most of those songs came from visceral feelings rather than actual events.

How do you use music to heal others and yourself?

Healing implies there’s something that’s inherently wrong, needing to be fixed. I make music with the intention of affirming perfection that’s already there. I try to connect with my natural core essence, beyond the mere lyrics and I try to share that with everyone to some degree. Any of my musical choices, when it comes to production and arrangement, comes straight from the core of my being to serve as an illustration of who I am and what I have to say.

Why should we listen to you?

First and foremost, I’m a pretty hedonistic person. If something makes me feel good, it’s worth my attention. Anything that brings you joy is good for you and contributes to your expansion. So, if you hear my music and it does that for you, then keep listening. If that’s not a good enough reason, the streaming coins help me buy $5 boxes from Popeyes so… there’s also that.

What upcoming projects are you working on?

I’ve been working on a full length project called Baby Boy over the last year as well as a mixtape called Playboy. Playboy is straight rap, bar for bar, just to remind the girls who I am and what I am capable of. Baby Boy has lots of songs but it is still in its nebulous stages. I have so many ideas that it can get quite muddled at times but ultimately I trust myself to put out good music.

Where can we get updates on your newest projects?

My twitter (@cruelcassius) is a daily account of my whole life so you can be sure that anything important will be announced there first. I also keep up with Instagram (also (@cruelcassius) and you can follow me at the same name on the streaming service of your choice by searching ‘Cassius Cruz’!
